A Game of IP addresses
“IP addresses” is a very big term if you exploring the cyber world
An Internet Protocol Address / IP address is a unique address that computing devices, such as personal computers, tablets, and smartphones use to communicate with other devices in the IP network. Any device connected to the IP network must have a unique IP, like every house has its own address every SIM is its own and unique number….
Versions of IP’s
There are two versions of IP addresses
1- IP versions 4 (IPv4)
2- IP versions 6 (IPv6)
IPv4
IP Version 4 (IPv4) was invented in 1970 and was first introduced to the public in 1981. The IPv4 uses 32-bit IP address space capable of providing a maximum number of 232 or 4,294,967,296 IP addresses. IPv4 takes great measures to deliver data packets right to its host. This is because the versions IPv 4gets were hired by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Hence, data can be guaranteed of delivery and avoidance of duplicate. Even though IPv4 contains a specification for its mobility, it is considered to be inefficient. The reason for this is the fact that it has its own infrastructure. Hence, its mobility nodes are inefficient too. An IPv4 address is typically formatted as four 8-bit fields. Each 8-bit field is called an octet represents a byte (8 bits) of the IPv4 address.
IPv6
The IPv6 is the most recent version of Internet Protocol. As the Internet is growing rapidly, there is a global shortage of IPv4. IPv6 uses a 128-bit address and it allows approximately 3.4×1038 addresses. The IPv6 addresses are represented by 8 groups of four hexadecimal digits with the groups being supported by colons.
IPv6 supports multicast rather than broadcast. Multicast allows bandwidth-intensive packet flows (like multimedia streams) to be sent to multiple destinations simultaneously, saving network bandwidth. Disinterested hosts no longer must process broadcast packets. In addition, the IPv6 header has a new field, named Flow Label, that can identify packets belonging to the same flow.
Because IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, the pool of possible addresses is 340 undecillion (3.4×1038). IPv4’s 32-bit addresses allow for only 4.3 billion addresses. A bigger pool of addresses obviously means more scalability, but, less obviously, it also means increased security. That’s because, under the IPv6 system, host scanning and identification are more difficult for hackers.
When IPv4 was first developed, internet security wasn’t as much of an issue as it is today. This explains why the few security protocols available for IPv4 appear to have been developed as an afterthought. But IPv6 was built with security in mind. Many of the IPv4’s optional security requirements have been baked into IPv6 as default requirements. For instance, IPv6 automatically encrypts traffic and checks packet integrity. This gives standard internet traffic VPN-level protection.
With IPv6, there are two separate address spaces for private addressing. These are called “link-local” and “site-local”. A link-local address has lots of useful functions, including hosting auto configuration by simply querying the router (no DHCP necessary!) and setting up ad-hoc LANs without a router. This means you can connect PCs and share files without having to bother with file-sharing protocols.
There are two types of IP addresses
1- Static IP addresses
2- Dynamic IP addresses
Static IP’s
As the name indicates, the static IP addresses are fixed Internet Protocol addresses however, they can be changed as per the requirement or availability of the IP address. They serve as a permanent Internet address and provide a simple yet reliable way of communication connected in a network, generally static IP”s are used by servers or other important equipment. A static IP address may be IPv4 or IPv6; in this case, the important quality is static. Some day, every bit of networked gear we have might have a unique static IPv6 address. We’re not there yet. For now, we usually use static IPv4 addresses for permanent addresses.
Advantage and disadvantage of static IP
1- It provides a better level of protection.
2-You have access to accurate geolocation data.
3- Static IP is easy to trace
4- You’ll find it easier to locate shared devices.
5- Static IP gives you a remote access
6- Your download and transfer speeds will in general be quick
7- Devices with a static IP address are simpler to follow
8- It very well may be hard to change after penetration
9- Each static IP must be manually configured.
Dynamic IP’s
A dynamic IP address is a temporary IP address assigned to a computer, smartphones, tabs, etc. when they get connected to the Internet each time. They are actually borrowed from a pool of IP addresses, shared over various computers. Since IPV4 is having a limited number of IP addresses, ISPs make a pool of IP addresses for sharing them among their subscribers. The assigning, reassigning, and modification of dynamic IP addresses are managed by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. One of the primary reasons behind having dynamic IP addresses is the shortage of static IP addresses on IPv4. Dynamic IP addresses allow a single IP address to be shuffled between many different nodes to circumvent this problem.
Advantage and disadvantage of Dynamic IP
1- It is less secure in the comparison of static IP’s
2- It is not easy to trace
