A man in Delhi’s Palam village attempted to take his own life on the intervening nights of June 3 and June 4. The man would have died had it not been for Facebook’s alertness and prompt response by the Delhi Cyber Police(CyPAD).

After a two-hour coordinated effort between an Ireland-based official of the social networking site, Facebook, and officers of the Delhi Police Cyber Cell helped save the life of a 27-year-old man who was allegedly contemplating suicide by jumping off the Signature Bridge in north Delhi.

According to senior police officers involved in the operation, the man was found near Khajoori Chowk in northeast Delhi, nearly 500 meters away from the Signature Bridge.

Police said that the man was upset because of a relationship failure, following which he uploaded a “disturbing post” on the social networking site, hinting that he was contemplating committing suicide. The post was seen by a Facebook official in Ireland who immediately flagged the matter to the cybercrime unit (CyPAD) of the Delhi Police around 2 pm on Friday, said deputy commissioner of police (CyPAD) Aneesh Roy.

The DCP further said that through analysis of technical data, CyPAD team members were able to reach out to the man’s brother, who quickly joined the police teams in their search operation. The man was located on a road near Khajoori Chowk. “He is counseled by professionals,” said the DCP.

Police said the man was identified as a Seelampur resident in northeast Delhi. He was pursuing an MBA at a private university but dropped out after his relationship ended recently.

In August last year, a similar coordinated effort between Facebook and police officials of Delhi and Mumbai police helped save the life of a Delhi-based man who had gone to Mumbai after having an argument with his wife.

At 7.51 pm on Saturday, DCP Aneesh Roy received a call from Ireland. An official from Facebook informed him that their systems have identified ‘suicidal activity’ on a Facebook account belonging to a Delhi resident and the information was further shared on his email address, the police officials said.

Mr. Roy managed to trace the location of the phone user to Mandawali here. The details were shared with DCP (East) Jasmeet Singh, who then despatched his staff to the woman’s house. However, the officials were relieved on reaching the spot to find her fine. When enquired, she said it's her phone number but her Facebook account is being used by her husband, who is living in Mumbai. She told police that her husband had left for Mumbai after a fight ensued between them around 14 days ago. He has been working as a cook in a hotel there since then.

She shared her husband’s mobile number but was not aware of his address. When the Delhi Police tried to contact him, his number was found to be unreachable, so Mr. Roy got in touch with his counterpart in Mumbai, Mr. Bal Singh Rajput, and Dr. Rashmi Karandikar, DCP (Cyber) in Mumbai.

These types of cases show the power of our cyber police…..
