LINUX
LINUX is an operating system, it is a developed version of the UNIX operating system. Just like Mac and Windows LINUX is an operating system. LINUX is developed by Linus Torvalds while a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland.
Torvalds introduced LINUX in 1991
Features of LINUX — — -
1- LINUX is work on C.L.I (command line interface )but it can be converted to GUI (Graphical user interface) after installing packages.
2-LINUX operating system is freely available .
3- Provides hierarchical file management in which directories are arranged in proper manner.
4- Multitasking- Multitasking means the function of operating system to perform many tasks at the same time .
5- Linux is the secure operating system, there are no or loopholes or bugs in this OS (operating system).
6- Multi user -OS Multiple users means multi user can access the same system resources like memory, hard disk, etc. But condition is that they use different terminals to operate.
The kernel in Linux — — -
1- According to me the Linux kernel is the most secure, in comparison to another operating system, typically the kernel is responsible for memory, process and task management, and risk management. The kernel connects with the system hardware to the software, LINUX kernel is about 70 Mega bites big.
Critics have avowal kernel developers of covering up security flaws or at least not announcing them, in 2008 Torvalds responded on this — — -
I personally consider security bugs to be just “normal bugs”. I don’t cover them up, but I also don’t have any reason what-so-ever to think it’s a good idea to track them and announce them as something special…one reason I refuse to bother with the whole security circus is that I think it glorifies — and thus encourages — the wrong behavior. It makes “heroes” out of security people as if the people who don’t just fix normal bugs aren’t as important. In fact, all the boring normal bugs are way more important, just because there’s[sic] a lot more of them. I don’t think some spectacular security hole should be glorified or cared about as being any more “special” than a random spectacular crash due to bad locking.
Shell in LINUX — — —
LINUX has a good looking interface called a shell. The shell runs on command, it takes every command from the command prompt and passes it to the operating system kernel. shell provides the link between the user and kernel. Basically, the main function of the shell is to convert the command given by the user and send it to the kernel.
Some basic Commands in LINUX — — -
1- mkdir - With the help of this command we can create a directory.
2- PWD - If a user wants to see the current directory path so they used it.
3- cp - with the help of this command user can create a duplicate copy of any file.
4- mv- With the help of this command user can give a new name to the file or rename it easily.
5- rm Command - File which is present in a directory can be deleted, and it also can delete several files at the same time.
6- cal command- With the help of this command we can see any month from any year.
7- date command- This command is shown the current date and time set in the computer.
ABOUT THE LINUS TORVALDS
Linus Torvalds created the Linux OS. Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969 in Helsinki, Finland. Torvalds take up at the University of Helsinki in 1988, graduating with a master’s degree in computers. He write M.Sc. thesis was titled Linux: A Portable Operating System. An avid computer programmer, Linus authored many gaming applications in his early years. After purchasing a personal computer In January 1991, Torvalds purchased an Intel 80386-based IBM PC clone and then later received his copy of MINIX. he began using Minix, for use as a teaching tool. Torvalds started work on a new kernel, later to be named Linux, He made a team of volunteers to work on this new kernel, In 1996, Torvalds accepted an invitation to visit the California headquarters of Transmeta, a start-up company in the first stages of designing an energy saving central processing unit (CPU). Torvalds then accepted a position at Transmeta and moved to California with his family. then Torvalds continued to oversee kernel development for Linux. In 2003, Torvalds left Transmeta to focus exclusively on the Linux kernel, backed by the Open Source Development Labs , a consortium formed by high-tech companies, which included IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, AMD, RedHat, Novell and many others. The purpose of the consortium was to promote Linux development. OSDL merged with The Free Standards Group in January 2007 to become The Linux Foundation. Torvalds remains the ultimate authority on what new code is incorporated into the standard Linux kernel.
