Due to the awareness of the internet, our youth is fully prepared to fight cyber criminals but due to the lack of internet awareness. Many cybercriminals focus on people aged 60 and older to hack or run scams on. They tend to be less tech-savvy and less skeptical of suspicious cyber activity.

In a recent case, An Indian retired police officer registered an FIR that Rs 6.24 lakh was withdrawn from his bank account after his son exchanged the OTP with a caller who posed as a State Bank of India official.

According to cyber police, A person on 4 march call on the victim’s phone and claiming that he is from SBI officials, the call was answered by his son. The individual claimed that a total of Rs 2 lakh had been deducted from his account and that he (the official) required the OTP to reverse the amount.

Believing the caller, the victim’s son shared the OTP. Soon they got an SMS informing Rs 6.24 has been withdrawn from the account. The money was transferred to different accounts in New Delhi…….

Common Types of Cybercrimes and Financial Fraud Targeting Seniors

  • Promoting false offers of reverse mortgages and loans.
  • Charging fraudulent or unnecessary services using elderly victims’ Medicaid or Medicare information.
  • Tricking seniors into purchasing unnecessary products or services, such as a coffin for a deceased spouse when they will be cremated.
  • Provide personal and financial information so they easily trusted them.

How do we safe our senior citizens from cyber fraud

Never Assume A Stranger Online is Trustworthy

Unless you have a real-world relationship with the person trying to communicate with you over email, video chat and messaging, or social media, they’re likely looking to take advantage of you. Sometimes an email offers a deal that is too good to be true. It is likely a fictitious offer or prize created to trick you into revealing private information, to wire money to a scammer, or to get you to install malicious software on your computer. This trick is usually applied to old age people because they are not much aware of the internet they don't differentiate between safe applications or malicious applications...

Never Provide Any of Your Sensitive Information Online

Generally, cybercriminals try to do social engineering means they try to become your wellwisher so you can easily trust them and share your personal information with them...

I think that this is the responsibility of our youth that we spread awareness in senior citizens so they don't lose their saving…..
